Day 17 - Ljubljana to Lake Bled

The hostel owner in Ljubljana was so nice to let us have a long lie before our short train journey to Lake Bled. We headed through the town to the station to catch our train which looked like one from the 1940's which was pretty cool. I was then absolutely gutted when I found a poster on the train advertising some music concerts coming up in the area. On the poster I found out The Killers were playing in Ljubljana last night!! I would be lying if I said I was only a little annoyed..

Lake Bled is only 1 hour north of Ljubljana so we didn't have to wait long to marvel at the surroundings. Set in amongst the Julian Alps in the north of Slovenia, the whole area just blew us away as soon as we set foot off the train. The hostel owner offers a pick up service from the train station but we just decided to try and find it ourselves. We arrived to find an old guy sitting on the porch of the hostel welcoming us in to his home and we were given a free drink and ice lolly whilst waiting to be checked in, we'd found another GREAT hostel!!

The reviews of the hostel were spot on, we were chauffeured around for free by the owner Damien into Lake Bled 15 minutes after we arrived where we spent 3 hours before he came to pick us up.

The hostel is only 5 minutes by car from Lake Bled but the surrounding scenery is absolutely spectacular!!! We arrived in Bled about dinner time so the sun was still shining and the whole place was just picture perfect. The aqua blue glacial lake looked fantastic with Bled Castle a top a cliff to one side and Bled church standing on an island in the middle of the lake. As we only had a few hours we decided to walk all the way round the lake to see what it had to offer. It isn't a huge place but we could have taken a picture at every point around the lake. We took in the fresh air and took our time to walk the 6km around the lake before returning to where Damien would pick us up.

The next amazing thing about this hostel was about to be revealed, a 3 course meal for €6!!!!! This wasn't some microwave rubbish either, it was proper homemade grub, and lots of it too. However, don't be fooled, the prices in restaurants around the lake are similar to most places in Western Europe making our deal even better!! We also got a surprise when we met some familiar faces in the shape of 2 Australian girls (“chick” as they say) who had stayed with us in the hostel in Ljubljana. Then we discovered 2 people also in our hostel were from Dunfermline who study in Aberdeen, small world, lol... We then chatted away to the Australian girls till late before heading off to bed.
