The day started off with a return to one of Sam's favourite hobbies and my first ever experience of horse riding. Sam rode for 5 years when she was younger so she knew what to expect but I was a complete beginner so it was to make for an interesting day. We were picked up at the hostel by Damiens son Niko where we were taken to meet his wife, Anja, who has 8 horses. She took us to the stables where we were introduced to our 2 horses, there is a picture below. They were Austrian alpine horses, but it is also common to find lots of German horses in Slovenia. They don't do horse racing, but they do show jumping and dressage.
I slowly climbed up on to my horse and was given the instructions on how to steer her, it was just like riding a bike as the horse was so well behaved and calm. My introduction to horse riding lasted all of 5 minutes before we set off on our trek through the hills, fields and forests. Anja took the lead on her horse with Sam comfortably following, then there was me holding on for dear life at the back.. I quickly got the hang of it as we trotted along the paths with some wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. Our 2 hour ride flew by and we both really enjoyed the whole experience. We didn't fall off, we had good fun and had a good laugh. Another thing ticked off the list.
We were driven back to Bled so we could meet up with the Australian girls, Cara and Vicki, to rent a rowing boat to go out to the island. Unfortunately for me I was nominated “rower” for the journey but after some near tipping moments we made it to the island safely. After a quick walk around the island, we headed down the 99 steps back to the boat where it was my turn to rest and the girls turn to row. We SLOWLY embarked on our journey back to dry land with us seeming to be going in circles (only joking) but thankfully we all made it back without falling in. A relaxing drink and some ice cream was next in line before we got back to the hostel for more amazing food and a short cycle around the village we were staying in before off to bed as we are leaving for Munich first thing tomorrow morning.
